The Talking Dog

September 25, 2008, Slow news day

Candidates Obama and McCain will meet at the White House today for hand-to-hand combat to the death to discuss the ongoing economic crisis.

All I can say is that this, the-greatest-campaign-ever, just keeps getting better, and better.

Update: As of Thursday 25 Sept. evening, no deal. But since his "brilliant bipartisan negotiating skills" appeared only to have queered an already done deal, does this qualify as a good enough excuse for McCain not to be in Oxford, MS tomorrow evening? Don't know, but that's sure not how you bet...

I wish I could enjoy it more. I'm trying.

As the catchphrase of a character in a late lamented WW2 sitcom over here had it " We're
a-l-l d-o-o-m-e-d" (hyphens = strangled Scottish accent).

I think what happened was a remarkable misdirection, which Obama had to play out simply because he couldn't detect a nanogram of testosterone in his party's entire Congressional delegation, i.e., no Democratic member, let alone leader, stood up and said "WHAT'S THE HURRY?" Why will western civilization end if this takes a week or two or three...? SLOW DOWN! Let's make sure the taxpayer-- who will be paying this back for decades, if not forever-- is adequately considered here. But noooooo....

Since Obama saw that the Dem leadership was going to cave on this anyway, he seized on the opportunity to force them to cave TODAY, thereby forcing McCain back to Oxford, MS to take his medicine on foreign policy (and to make Palin keep her scheduled appointment with Biden.)

My God. After 8 years of this, I guess it's a reflex now. The most unpopular president in the history of popularity measurements goes on t.v. for 15 minutes, and the so-called opposition party folds like an accordion.

An amazing misdirection. We were all thinking this was about McCain... while the people who really matter, his backers, saw this as about themselves and used McCain to set the rest of this in motion to make Obama get his Congressional guys, notably Dodd, to cave faster, before everybody figured out that the whole thing was a giant 3-card monte game.

Yeah... we're "doomed"... though my spelling begins with an "f".

Via firedoglake and digby, it seems that our friends in the Bush Administration have been plotting this little bailout plan "for weeks or months"... but Congress must act on it within days or the world will end. Remind anyone of anything else?

Oh... game, set, match. Yeah... we're f***ed. Yet again.
